As we step into the new year, it can be tempting to want to cast out the old entirely in order to leave room only for the new. We hope for fresh opportunities and positive new chapters, keen to let go of what caused us anxiety or difficulty the year before.

However, it’s important to appreciate how far you’ve really come. The fact you’re here reading this article already highlights your complete ability to survive anything that life throws at you, including the events of 2020—congratulations!

To cultivate a prosperous year ahead, you just need the right resolutions to get you moving in the right direction. Here are 5 empowering ways to help you achieve your positive intentions:

Set goals that will excite you. Resolutions that are too complex soon become overwhelming. Plan achievable goals that spark authentic passion for you. Pick out challenges that make you smile when you think of them. This is your year, to be created as you wish. Design resolutions to impress the only person you need to consider the approval of—you!

Get yourself an accountability buddy. Pursue activities that you can share with a friend. We are far more likely to achieve our goals when we share them. Whether it’s outdoor running once a week or an online class you tackle together, having a pal to share it with will make the process so much sweeter.

Celebrate the small wins. Made it off the couch and managed a few minute of the exercise you planned? Go you! Made enquiries about going back to school? Fantastic! Every step forwards should be rightfully acknowledged to keep you motivated longer term. From here, there’s no stopping you.

Document your process. It’s easy for our busy lives to pull us away from our deeper goals and

ambitions. It can also cause us to miss the moments when we truly succeed. Use journaling,

progress charts, private vlogging or any other form documentation to record your progress. You’ll soon look back with amazement at how far you’ve come.

Practice daily gratitude. Not every day will be a goal achieving one. Some days you might lose

focus, or become pulled away by life’s curve balls. To counteract potential frustration, form a habit of gratitude regarding your present reality. Pause regularly to appreciate the gifts in your life. Then take a deep breath, and keep swimming.

New year’s resolutions aren’t about redesigning your life or deleting what hasn’t worked. It’s about taking all the pieces you have collected so far and consciously building forwards with them in the direction that makes you feel happiest and the most fulfilled.

Consider the moments in your life when you have felt the most ‘you’ and truly thriving. What were you doing, and who were you with? Use these clues of intuition to guide you as you navigate 2021.Your future self will be very glad that you did.

Oh, and one last thing—Happy New Year!
